Science and Engagement Team (SET)

The Science and Engagement Team (SET) is charged with maintaining a connection between the academic geoscience and technology communities in EarthCube, facilitating engagement among the EarthCube community and individual geoscientists, as well as, linking the activities of the wider-EarthCube effort to relevant organizations and initiatives.

Strategic Science Plan: Geoscience 2020

The Strategic Science Plan: Geoscience 2020 is a living document that is evolving and will continue to evolve until August of this year (2015), at which point it will be submitted to the NSF as a component of EarthCube's overarching Scope and Vision document. The procedure being followed to develop the Science Plan was initiated in the Fall of 2014, culminating with two workshops. The EarthCube Scope and Vision Workshop took place in Berkeley, CA, on March 25 and 26. The core questions being asked of participants in this workshop were: What is EarthCube-enabled science?  How can EarthCube support different needs and research agendas, and generic as well as specific science drivers and use cases? Participants in the EarthCube Sci-Tech Workshop, to take place in Berkeley, CA, on April 23 and 24, will determine whether or not cyberinfrastructure products domain scientists want are technically and logistically feasible, and seek to establish when and in what form they might be made available for use.

Charter

Participation in the Science and Engagement Team and all its activities is based on volunteered effort. The SET Charter explains the purpose of the committee’s existence; the conditions governing membership; its organizational structure; and the roles and responsibilities of its members. Acknowledging that there are necessary trade-offs between fulfilling the Team’s responsibilities in a way that assures everyone's confidence and the need to fulfill those responsibilities within prescribed timeframes.
