About starting the application

I am new to EarthCube. Do you have step by step instructions for adding my profile information to this application?

Please see the Getting Started instructions at http://earthcube.ning.com/page/earthcube-member-connections.

I see the words 'Collection Loading' but nothing seems to be happening. What's the problem?

When you first get to the application, it will take a little time to open. Be patient. It will be faster the next time.

The application wants me to install the Microsoft Silverlight plugin. Why?

This application is based on Silverlight Pivot, which optimizes navigating, searching and visualizing information linked to images. More information about Silverlight can be found at http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/silverlight/. Installation instructions can be found at http://www.microsoft.com/getsilverlight/Get-Started/Install/Default.aspx. It is important that you the latest version of the plugin.

Shall I disable popup blocker for this application to work?

Yes. This version of the application requires that popup blocking is disabled.

I work on a Mac. Which browsers shall I use?

Safari and Firefox are supported on the Mac, but Chrome is not. A list of supported platforms and browsers is at http://www.microsoft.com/getsilverlight/Get-Started/Install/Default.aspx. Please make sure that you use the latest available browser and plugin versions. A step-by-step installation guide is at http://www.learn360.com/silverlight-plugin-install-mac.aspx.

I use Firefox, and have hard time installing Silverlight plugin. What shall I do?

Make sure you have the latest versions of the browser and of the plugin. You may need to check whether the plugin is enabled in Firefox, and/or reset the browser. These two forum posts include potential solutions: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/reset-firefox-easily-fix-most-problems, https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/945376. Also, potential solutions have been offered at Microsoft (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/981760) and Apple (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3357697?start=0&tstart=0) support pages.

I forgot my username or password. What shall I do?

If you forgot your password you can reset it from the login page, by clicking "Recover password", entering your username, and then following directions in the email sent to your address. If you forgot your username, please create a new account (using the same email address as before, to match the email already in your profile.)

I enter my EarthCube ning username and password, but the system doesn't recognize them. Why?

When you try to edit your profile for the first time, the system will present you with the options to "Create Account" or "Login". Please click "Create Account"! The memberconnections application requires a separate account from ning, for several reasons (ning doesn't support importing user credentials; in the future ning may be replaced as a platform for EarthCube community web site). In other words, don't attempt to login to the memberconnection application with ning credential without creating an account first: it won't work.

About navigating the gallery of EarthCube members and finding matches

How do I navigate the image gallery?

Use the mouse to pan and zoom in the gallery view, like navigating on Google Earth or Google Maps. Use the mouse scroll wheel or slider bar in the right upper corner to change zoom level. You can display cards in a grid or graph view using icons next to the upper right corner slider. You can also subset displayed cards in several ways. Type a search word/phrase in the search box at the upper left or use categories or selections in the left search panel to find people based on their primary and secondary areas of expertise, affiliations, etc.

How do I find people with specific expertise?

Here is an example. If you want to find hydrologists who also do modeling or visualization: (1) click on Primary Domain to expand it showing the selections, check the Hydrology box, (2) click on the Secondary Domain to show the list and check Visualization and Modeling. That pulls up the gallery of people who consider themselves hydrologists and do modeling or visualization. You can also type ďhydroĒ in the search box, to see all entries related to Hydrology. This will include anyone picking hydrology as a primary or secondary domain as well as people with organizational affiliations that have hydrology in the name or hydrology in their research interests. You can then select modeling, visualization in the primary and secondary domain categories to subset this larger group to get to your target group.

How do I find people from a place that may also be referred to by an acronym and is located at a place that has a different name? For example Lamont Doherty Earth Observatory, which is also known as LDEO and which is at Columbia University?

Type 'Lamont' or 'LDEO' in the search box. You could also expand the 'Primary Affiliation' category and check the box next to 'LDEO (Lamont Doherty Earth Observatory)'. Using the primary affiliation search, however, will miss those who specified LDEO or Lamont as their secondary affiliation.

Letís say I want to see how people in a workshop I was at are distributed by primary domain and also by country. How do I do that?

Click and expand the 'Specialty Group' category and check the workshop name. The gallery of participants who have surfaced their information on the application will appear. You can see the various distributions of these people by clicking the 'Graph View' (bar graph) icon at the top right and selecting 'Primary Domain' or 'Country' as the 'Sort Order'.

About editing member profiles

My profile is incomplete or needs to be changed. How do I do that?

Bring up your card and double click your picture. A pop-up will appear with all of the information in your profile. If this is your first time, you need to create an account (login and password) to edit your information. Be sure that your email address matches the email you used when registering on the EarthCube community website (http://earthcube.ning.com). Once you have created an account with a log in and password, you will be able to edit your information. To make changes, click the 'Edit Profile' button on the pop-up with all of your information in it and click the Save Button. Clicking on Close will take you back to your gallery picture. The application is updated on a regular basis (nightly or bi-weekely) so it may take a few days before the updated information appears on the cards. During the launch of the application we will update information nightly.

When I try to double click on my card in a gallery, the card gets bigger and smaller and moves around and I canít get it to get into profile edit mode. What do I do?

If you pull up your card by your name so it is the only one on the page, you should have no problem double clicking on it and entering the edit profile pop-up. If you want to access your card from a gallery, click on your card and then use the mouse scroll wheel to expand the view so your card nearly fills the screen and double click. This will open your card.

When I double-click on my card nothing happens. Why?

You need to disable a popup-blocker to see your editable profile window. Instructions are browser-dependent and can be found at http://www.hotcomm.com/FAQ/FAQ_popups.asp or http://www.ehow.com/how_4856521_disable-popup-blocker-mac.html

I donít seem to have a card. What do I do?

Search for yourself by typing your name into the search box. If it does not appear, you probably havenít registered at the EarthCube community website (http://earthcube.ning.com). Please register there and send an email to ec_apps@sdsc.edu. We harvest new registrations from the ning site periodically (every couple days), or can do it on demand.

I want to add a photo, or the one in there is low resolution. How do I replace it with a different image?

Upload the photo you want to use to the EarthCube community website (http://earthcube.ning.com). Then email us at ec_apps@sdsc.edu. Or you can email your photo to us directly.

I updated my profile, but the information on the card hasnít changed. Why?

When you update the profile and reload the gallery, information in the information panel on the right side of the gallery is updated right away. Gallery cards are regenerated at regular cycles (every couple days, or more frequently depending on demand). If you donít see your updated information on your card in a day or two, or find any other discrepancy, please email us at ec_apps@sdsc.edu.

I created an account, but I canít edit my profile. What is the problem?

Check that the email address you used as a login to create your account matches the email you used to register on the EarthCube community website (http://earthcube.ning.com). You can see the 'earthcube.ning' email in the information panel on the right when you pull up your card. You can also see it in your profile on the edit page. If the emails match and you still canít get to the edit screen, please email us at ec_apps@sdsc.edu.

I updated my primary affiliation in my profile, but my affiliation designation is slightly different now. Why?

Application curators will try to adjusted spelling and unify references to organizations, domains, and specialty groups, to make searches more productive and easier. Affiliation changes will be kept to a minimum, but please email us (ec_apps@sdsc.edu) if you disagree with them.

When I edit my profile, what do I put as my primary organizational affiliation and what goes into secondary?

This is a match-making/search utility so the more uniform affiliations are the better, and the more they reflect the types of things that you might want people to identify you with, the better. Your primary affiliation should be the place you most strongly identify with. Please enter only one entity. If you have a joint appointment, please use the one that you most identify with for your Primary Affiliation. You can list your other appointments in the Secondary Affiliation field. Please see if you Primary Affiliation is already listed by name or acronym and then use that format if you can. If your organization is known primarily by an acronym, please define it after the acronym to help those who may not be familiar with it (e.g., if you are from the San Diego Supercomputer Center and it is commonly known as SDSC, enter it as SDSC (San Diego Supercomputer Center). If you are from a University, please do not abbreviate. This is because each variation will create a new entry, and we want to keep all of the people from, say, Indiana University listed under that one institution, not also under IU and Indiana U. If you are at a well established research institute that is at a university, it is OK to use the institute as your primary affiliation (e.g., NSIDC (National Snow and Ice Data Center) which is at the University of Colorado, Boulder, even though it is associated with a university.) For your secondary affiliation, put in whatever you feel is appropriate. For example for the NSIDC example above, the secondary might be University of Colorado, Boulder. The most common situation for university professors, researchers and students will be identification with a university as the primary affiliation, and with a department as secondary. If you have joint appointments or want to be known from a number of different institutes, you can chain them into your secondary affiliation entry.

I want to include information from LinkedIn or other sources. I also want to put a link to my CV or web page. How do I do this?

As we harvested information from the EarthCube community website (http://earthcube.ning.com) , we carried over the link to your 'Homepage or blog' field. Please update it if needed. You can also add a URL to your Research Interests field. However, it is critical for you to summarize your research interests in the Research Interests box because this information will be made visible on your card and will be searchable by this application. The more keywords that identify what you do and your interests will facilitate others identifying you as a potential collaborative partner.

My primary or secondary domain is not listed. How do I add it?

When you edit your profile, select 'Other' and type in the new domain name. Note that you can have zero or as many Secondary Domains as you want, but only one Primary Domain.

A group of us want to create our own specialty group? How do we do that?

Please contact an application curator (Genevieve Pearthree at genevieve.pearthree@azgs.az.gov or Tom Whitenack at ec_apps@sdsc.edu) and they will help get it set up.

General questions

I have some ideas about how this application can be improved, and/or have additional places where a platform like this would be useful. Who do I contact?

Please email ec_apps@sdsc.edu. We can show you examples of this platform/utility as it applies to biodiversity studies, the analysis and visualization of soil samples, of survey data, neuroscience imagery, geoscience model catalogs, etc. It will be also used to allow searching of the EarthCube community inventory of cyberinfrastructure resources (to be released soon)

What platforms and browsers are supported?

The application runs on Windows (Internet Explorer, FireFox, Chrome) and Mac (FireFox and Safari). See supported platforms and browsers at http://www.microsoft.com/getsilverlight/Get-Started/Install/Default.aspx. We are planning an HTML5 implementation in the future, to support additional platforms.

My card is not updated, or I experience other problems.

Please email ec_apps@sdsc.edu
